Understanding EMDR

What to Expect

You won't be asked to relive every detail out loud. Instead, we'll use guided eye movements (or other gentle, rhythmic stimulation) while you hold a memory or feeling in mind. Your job isn't to talk it all through — it's to notice what comes up and let your brain do what it does naturally: process and move forward. Sessions are paced to your nervous system, not a script, and you stay in control the whole time.

CBT Resources

CBT — Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — is built on a simple idea: how we think shapes how we feel, and how we feel shapes how we act. Together, we'll identify the thought patterns that keep you stuck, test whether they're actually true, and build more useful ones in their place. It's practical, collaborative, and gives you tools you can use long after sessions end.

A few books my clients have found genuinely helpful.

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk — A look at how trauma lives in the body, not just the mind, and how healing often means working with the nervous system, not around it.

Getting Past Your Past by Francine Shapiro — Written by the founder of EMDR, this book breaks down how unprocessed memories shape present-day struggles, and how reprocessing them can create real change.

Feeling Good by David Burns — A classic, practical guide to CBT that helps you spot distorted thinking and build healthier patterns in its place.

Attached by Amir Levine & Rachel Heller — An accessible look at attachment styles and how they shape the way we connect, trust, and show up in relationships.

Stop Walking on Eggshells by Paul T. Mason & Randi Kreger — For anyone navigating a relationship with someone whose emotions feel unpredictable or overwhelming, this offers grounded tools for setting boundaries without losing the relationship.
